DESCRIPTION : THIS LARGE 4 SHEET MAP IS STATE TWO OF THE SECOND EDITION OF A MAP, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED SOMETIME BETWEEN 1682 AND 1704. RELATIVELY LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THIS MAP, WHICH CUMMING AND VERNER DATE BETWEEN 1725 AND 1728 BECAUSE OF THE INCLUSION IN THE IMPRINT OF FISHER MOUNT'S NAME. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE MOUNT & PAGE FIRM FROM 1725 TO 1728. VERNER PICKS THE DATE 1727 FROM THIS RANGE ARBITRARILY.

THE MAP WAS ISSUED AS A SEPARATE. THE THORNTON NAME APPEARS IN THE DEDICATION PLAQUE, BUT NOT IN THE TITLE. THIS IS A LATER STATE OF A MAP SOLD BY T. PAGE WITH THE SAME TITLE, THAT CUMMING DATES BETWEEN 1685 AND 1702. WE BELIEVE THAT THE MAP IS BASED ON A ONE SHEET THORNTON MAP, WHICH WE ESTIMATE TO DATE BETWEEN 1682 AND 1704. HELEN WALLIS INDICATES IN A PRIVATE LETTER THAT THE EARLIER MAP, ENTITLED "A LARGE MAPP OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, PENSYLVANIA, EAST AND WEST NEW JERSEY, & NEW YORK. BY JOHN THORNTON AT THE SIGNE OF ENGLAND SCOTLAND AND IRELAND IN THE MINORIES, LONDON", WAS INCLUDED IN THORNTON'S ATLAS MARITIMUS, WHICH THE BM DATES AS 1704, BUT IT MAY HAVE BEEN IN EARLIER ATLASES ALSO, OR BEEN ISSUED AS A SEPARATE. BOTH EDITIONS ARE BASED ON THE HERRMAN MAP OF 1673. THE MAP DESCRIBED USES THE BASIC GEOGRAPHY, NOMENCLATURE, SYMBOLS FOR HOUSES AND PLANTATIONS AND EVEN HAS SOME OF THE SAME NOTES SPREAD THROUGHOUT. THE ENGRAVING ON THIS CHART IS MORE ORNATE AND CAREFULLY LETTERED THAN ARE EITHER THE HERRMAN OR THE EARLIER THORNTON EDITION. THE SHAPE OF THE SHOALS AND THE SHAPE AND LOCATION OF THE COASTAL ISLANDS ALONG THE SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY COAST ARE BETTER DEFINED AND MUCH MORE CAREFULLY DONE THAN IS THE THORNTON & GREENE CHART OF 1676.

VERNER IN HIS UNPUBLISHED NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA, DOES NOT RECORD THE EARLIER THORNTON MAP, BUT SAYS OF THE MAP DESCRIBED, "IT IS AFTER HERRMAN, BUT EXTENDS FURTHER NORTH THAN THAT MAP TO INCLUDE A DETAILED REPRESENTATION OF NEW YORK HARBOR. IT PROVIDES MORE DETAILS INCLUDING COUNTY NAMES IN THE NEW JERSEY AREA AS WELL AS ALONG THE DELAWARE RIVER INCLUDING SOME PENNSYLVANIA COUNTIES. THE SOUNDINGS AND SHOALS IN THE DELAWARE AND CHESAPEAKE BAYS AND ALONG THE COAST DIFFER FROM THOSE SUPPLIED BY HERRMAN." "FROM A HISTORICAL POINT OF VIEW THIS IS PERHAPS THE MOST USEFUL AND VALUABLE MAP OF THE AREA PUBLISHED BETWEEN THE HERRMAN OF 1673 AND THE FRY & JEFFERSON OF 1751. SINCE IT IS A COMPOSITE RATHER THAN A PROTOTYPE MAP IT IS NOT ACCORDED THE SAME STATUS AS THE HERRMAN. NEVERTHELESS, IT SUPPLIES SO MUCH MORE DATA THAN THAT MAP THAT IT IS OF GREATER VALUE TO HISTORIANS." SINCE THE BULK OF THE DATA IS SIMILAR TO THAT OF WHAT WE THINK IS EDITION ONE, PRESUMABLY HIS REMARKS WOULD HAVE APPLIED TO THAT MAP ALSO, HAD HE KNOWN OF ITS EXISTENCE.

ONE INTERESTING FEATURE IS THAT THE TWO STATES OF THE EDITION DESCRIBED HEREIN ARE THE FIRST OF THIS AREA TO IDENTIFY AND NAME THE 32 POINTS ON THE COMPASS ROSE.

COPIES OF THIS STATE OF THE MAP ARE KNOWN TO BE LOCATED IN THE CLEMENTS LIBRARY, THE BRITISH MUSEUM AND IN COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG.

DATA IS FROM VERNER, CUMMING AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : CUMMING AND VERNER INDICATE THAT THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO STATES OF THIS EDITION OF THE CHART. IT APPEARS TO BE CLOSELY BASED ON WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE AN EARLIER THORNTON CHART, DATED POSSIBLY AS EARLY AS 1682 (SEE MAP # 182T5), WHICH IN TURN IS DERIVED FROM HERRMAN. THE EARLIER THORNTON CHART IS ON ONE SHEET, WHEREAS THE SECOND EDITION IS ON FOUR.

ED. 1 - [1682-1704] - ENTITLED "A LARGE MAPP OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, PENSYLVANIA, EAST AND WEST NEW JERSEY, & NEW YORK. BY JOHN THORNTON AT THE SIGNE OF ENGLAND SCOTLAND AND IRELAND IN THE MINORIES, LONDON." THE CARTOUCHE IS ORIENTED WITH THE BOTTOM TO THE RIGHT. IT HAS TWO INDIAN FIGURES ON A PEDESTAL, ON EITHER SIDE OF THE TITLE. THE CARTOUCHE IS MUCH MORE SIMILAR TO THE HERRMAN CARTOUCHE THAN IS THE SECOND EDITION. THE DATE IS NOT KNOWN. IT APPEARED IN A 1704 ATLAS IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM, BUT IS LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN DONE BETWEEN 1682 AND 1685 (SEE MAP # 182T5 FOR A MORE COMPLETE EXPLANATION).

ED. 2 - STATE 1 - [1685-1702?] - ENTITLED "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, PENSILVANIA, NEW JERSEY, PART OF NEW YORK, AND CAROLINA. SOLD BY T. PAGE...TOWER HILL." IT IS IN 4 SHEETS. THE SHOALS AND SOUNDINGS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF EDITION 1. SEE MAP # 185T7.

- STATE 2 - [1725-1728?] - THE IMPRINT IS ALTERED TO READ "SOLD BY T: PAGE & W: & F. MOUNT IN TOWER HILL". THE DATE DERIVES FROM THE TIME WHEN FISHER MOUNT WAS A MEMBER OF MOUNT & PAGE AND HAD HIS NAME IN THE FIRM'S IMPRINT. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

DATA IS BASED PARTLY ON CUMMING, PARTLY ON VERNER AND PARTLY ON OBSERVATION OF THE HUNTINGFIELD COPY OF EDITION ONE.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS AN 8 X 10" GLOSSY PHOTOGRAPH OF STATE 2 OF EDITION 2 OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM COPY AND ONE OF THE COPY IN COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG. HFC ALSO HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLORED COPY OF EDITION 1 WITH A HFC ACQ. # OF NSOL018-H3 AND A MdHR # OF G1399-98. WE WERE OFFERED A COPY OF THIS MAP BY ARADER ON 5/11/87 FOR $27,500.
