DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP COVERS FROM BAFFIN BAY TO THE NORTHERN EDGE OF SOUTH AMERICA AND FROM THE AZORES TO THE WESTERN EDGE OF CALIFORNIA. AS SUCH, IT DOES NOT REALY BELONG IN A MARYLAND COLLECTION, SINCE THE PORTRAYAL OF THE STATE IS SO SMALL. THIS MAP IS A DERIVATIVE OF ONE BY D'LISLE, FIRST PREPARED IN 1700. IT WAS DESCRIBED BY R.V. TOOLEY AS A "FOUNDATION MAP". HE INDICATES THAT THE DEPICTION OF THE GREAT LAKES IS BASED ON CORONELLI SHOWING THE FRENCH STRONG POINTS AT TADOUSAC, QUEBEC, FORT SOREL, MONTREAL & FORT FRONTENAC. THE ENGLISH SETTLEMENTS CONFINED TO THE EAST OF THE ALLEGHENIES, WITH FORT AND RIVER KINIBEKI AS THE BORDER BETWEEN NEW ENGLAND AND ACADIA. THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AREA IS SHOWN WELL DEVELOPED WITH THE RECENT FRENCH SETTLEMENTS OF d'IBERVILLE AT BELOCHY AND FORTS AT BON SECOURS AND ST. LOUIS." THE DE L'ISLE MAP WAS THE FIRST PRINTED MAP TO SHOW HERBES FLOTANTES SUR MER (THE SARGASSO SEA) AND THE FIRST TO REVERT TO A PENINSULAR FORM FOR CALIFORNIA. IT WAS REPRINTED BY CHEZ L. RENARD LIBRAIRE OF AMSTERDAM IN 1708. IN THAT YEAR ON THE QUAI DE L'HORLOGE ANOTHER IMPRINT WAS MADE THAT ERASED THE RENARD IMPRINT ON THE PLATE. ALSO IN 1708, THE MAP WAS REENGRAVED BY PIERRE MORTIER, WHO DISCARDED THE AVERTISSEMENT AND SHIFTED THE SCALE INSET AND THE TITLE CARTOUCHE. THIS EDITION IS ALSO ASCRIBED TO N. SANSON. IN 1730 COVENS & MORTIER REISSUED THE MAP IN AMSTERDAM. P. SCHENK MADE THE MAP HEREIN DESCRIBED WITH THE DATE 1708, BUT WRITER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE IF THIS WAS THE ACTUAL DATE OF PUBLICATION. J. WOLFF, J.F. PROBST (WOLFF'S SUCCESSOR), R & J OTTENS AND LOTTER ALL REISSUED THIS MAP BY 1757.

DATA IS FROM TOOLEY'S "FRENCH MAPPING OF THE AMERICAS", MCS #33, 18-19, PHILLIPS MAPS OF AMERICA IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM TOOLEY'S STUDY IN THE MAP COLLECTORS' SERIES #33, PP. 18-19, SINCE WRITER HAS SEEN ONLY THE PIERRE SCHENK VERSION. THE EXACT SEQUENCE AND IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS ARE NOT ALWAYS NOTED.

IN THIS REENGRAVED MAP THE TITLE CARTOUCHE IS TRANSFERRED TO THE TOP LEFT CORNER AND THE SCALES TO THE TOP RIGHT CORNER WITHIN A NEW DESIGN OF A DRAPED CURTAIN. THE AVERTISSEMENT IS ELIMINATED AND AN ADDITIONAL TITLE IN LATIN IS ABOVE THE MAP. IT APPEARED IN ATLAS NOUVEAU DE DIVERSES CARTES CHOISIES DES MEILLEURS GEOGRAPHES COMME SANSON, G. DE L'ISLE ETC... A AMSTERDAM CHEZ PIERRE MORTIER, GEOGRAPHE MDCCVIII. WRITER WAS UNABLE TO FIND THIS LISTED IN KOEMAN. A COPY IS IN THE ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY.

- STATE 2[?] - (DATE?) - TOOLEY SAYS THIS MAP ALSO EXISTS IN A VERSION ASCRIBED TO "N. SANSON".

ED. 3 - STATE 1 - (1700-1730) - THE TITLE IS ALTERED TO READ "...A AMSTERDAM CHEZ I. COVENS & C. MORTIER. AVEC PRIVILEGE." THIS VERSION IS IN ATLAS NOUVEAU...PAR GUILLAUME DE L'ISLE...A AMSTERDAM CHEZ JEAN COVENS & CORNEILLE MORTIER MDCCXXX.
