DESCRIPTION : THIS LARGE SCALE MAP, CENTERED ON MARYLAND AND THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA, IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IN THE HISTORY OF THE CARTOGRAPHY OF THE REGION. IT IS AN EXACT COPY OF THE FIRST STATE OF THE 1689 MAP BY JOHN THORNTON (SEE MAP # 189T5). THORNTON'S MAP, IN TURN, IS DERIVED FROM AUGUSTINE HERRMAN'S MAP OF 1673. CUMMING ATTRIBUTES "CARTE PARTICULIERE..." TO NICOLAS SANSON HEIRS OR A.H. JAILLOT, WHOSE ATLASES WERE PUBLISHED BY MORTIER, BUT DATES THE MAP AS 1690-1696 FOR FIRST PUBLICATION.

IN 1693, MORTIER PUBLISHED A COUNTERFEITED COPY OF THE FRENCH NEPTUNE, BASED ON AN ORIGINAL FRENCH PROTOTYPE. LATER IN 1693 A NEW PART ENTITLED ATLAS MARITIME WAS PUBLISHED WITH 9 CHARTS ENGRAVED BY ROMEIN DE HOOGHE. THIS PART IS OFTEN FOUND BOUND TO THE INITIAL VOLUME. IN 1700, A SECOND ADDITONAL PART WAS PUBLISHED, ENTITLED SUITE DU NEPTUNE FRANCOIS, OU ATLAS NOUVEAU DES CARTES MARINES, WHICH WAS BASED ON MANUSCRIPT CHARTS COPIES BY D'ABLANCOURT FROM THE ORIGINALS IN PORTUGESE ARCHIVES. THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN WAS # 31 IN THAT VOLUME (SEE KOEMAN, IV, M. MOR 7, # 31). PHILLIPS ATLASES, # 517 LISTS ONLY 2 VOLUMES. APPARENTLY IT INCLUDED ATLAS MARITIME AS PART OF VOL. 1 AND SHOWS THE MAP AS " # [27]" APART FROM THE FIRST VOLUME, WHICH HAD A SECOND EDITION IN 1703, NONE OF THE ATLASES WERE REPUBLISHED. UNLIKE THE CUSTOM OF THE DAY, THESE CHARTS WERE NOT KEPT UP TO DATE AND APPARENTLY WERE ISSUED IN ONLY ONE STATE.

KOEMAN NOTES THAT MORTIER'S ATLAS WAS INTENDED MORE AS A SHOW-PIECE THAN AS A WORKING CHART FOR PILOTS AT SEA. THIS WOULD ACCOUNT FOR THE MAGNIFICANCE OF ITS PRODUCTION, WHICH SOMETIMES INCLUDED HIGHLIGHTING IN GOLD LEAF.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN, VERNER, CUMMING'S "EARLY MAPS OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY", AND MATHEWS.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE ARE THOUGHT TO EXIST.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLORED COPY AS DESCRIBED. IT HAS A MDHR # OF G1399- 200 AND AN ACQ. # OF A025-L2.
