BEST INFO SOURCE : BAER, SEVENTEENTH CENTURY MARYLAND.
DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP COVERS FROM BUCKS COUNTY, PA. IN THE NORTH TO THE SEVERN RIVER IN THE SOUTH AND INCLUDES PART OF WEST NEW JERSEY. IT WAS THE SECOND DETAILED MAP OF THE AREA AFTER THE WORK OF THOMAS HOLME IN 1687. MARYLAND IS COVERED ONLY INCIDENTALLY AND ONLY MARYLAND NAMES ON THE EASTERN SHORE ARE SHOWN. THE BOUNDARY LINE BETWEEN PRESENT DELAWARE (THEN THE 3 LOWER COUNTIES OF PENNSYLVANIA) IS A DOTTED LINE ONLY VAGUELY RESEMBLING THE PRESENT BOUNDARIES. SEVERAL MEANINGLESS SOUNDINGS ARE SHOWN IN THE CHESAPEAKE. THE MAP WAS COMPILED BY PHILIP LEA, WITH HELP FROM GABRIEL THOMAS.

THIS MAP IS INCLUDED IN A SMALL 8vo VOLUME BY GABRIEL THOMAS ENTITLED AN HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL ACCOUNT OF...PENSILVANIA: AND OF WEST-NEW-JERSEY..., A. BALDWIN, 1698, IN THE PREFACE TO THE WORK ON PENNSYLVANIA. THE MAP ILLUSTRATED THIS WORK, WHICH BAER CALLED ONE OF THE EARLIEST AND MOST ACCURATE ACCOUNTS OF PENNSYLVANIA AND WEST NEW JERSEY, ISSUED TO PROMOTE COLONIZATION. THE AUTHOR CAME TO PENNSYLVANIA AS ONE OF THE FIRST SETTLERS IN 1681. HIS ACCOUNT IS LIKE A PROSPECTUS IN THAT IT DESCRIBES THE REGION, ITS PRODUCTS, ITS HISTORY AND ITS NATIVE INDIANS. HE URGES THE CRAFTSMEN AND TRADESMEN TO IMMIGRATE TO THE AREA BECAUSE OF THE HIGH WAGES AND THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCEMENT.

SABIN, WINDSOR AND BAER ALL NOTE A GERMAN EDITION, DATED 1702 WITH THE MAP UNDER THE TITLE CONTINUATIO DER BESCHREIBUNG DER LANDSCHAFFT PENSYLVANIAE AN DENEN END-GRANTZEN AMERICAE..., FRANCKFURT UND LEIPZIG, ANDREAS OTTO.

DATA IS FROM BAER, SABIN, WINDSOR AND FROM EXAMINATION OF THE REPRODUCTION IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : SABIN MENTIONS THAT THERE IS A GERMAN EDITION OF THE WORK BY GABRIEL THOMAS IN WHICH THE MAP APPEARED WITHOUT THE PART ON NEW JERSEY, DATED 1702 UNDER THE TITLE "CONTINUATIO DER BESCHREIBUNG DER LANDSCHAFFT PENSYLVANIAE AN DENEN END-GRANTZEN AMERICAE, FRANCKFORT UND LEIPZIG, ANDREAS OTTO, 1702 (SABIN # 95394). SABIN NOTES THAT A FOLDED MAP IS ATTACHED TO THIS WORK, BUT WE HAVEN'T SEEN IT AND DON'T KNOW WHETHER ANY CHANGES OCCURRED. SABIN ALSO NOTES A FACSIMILE ISSUE "LITHOGRAPHED FOR HENRY AUSTIN BRADY"...BY FRANCIS MICHELIN, NEW YORK, 1848. IT WAS REPRINTED IN LIBERTY BELL LEAFLETS NOS. 5-6, 1900 BY THE BURROWS BROTHERS COMPANY, CLEVELAND, 1903; AND BY THE AURAND PRESS, HARRISBURG, 1935, EDITED BY A. MONROE AURAND. SEE BAER FOR A COMPREHENSIVE LISTING OF OUTSTANDING COPIES.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A FULL SIZE BLACK AND WHITE REPRODUCTION OF THIS MAP AND THE PUBLICATION IN WHICH IT WAS FOUND, MADE FROM A COPY LENT BY KEN NEBENZAHL. THE MAP AND TEXT HAVE MDHR #s OF G1399-620(1) (REPRO) AND G1399-620(2), RESPECTIVELY.
