DESCRIPTION : THIS RARE MAP IS NOT CITED IN THE STANDARD LITERATURE. IT IS DERIVED FROM HERRMAN'S MAP OF 1673, WITH ADDITIONS DEPICTING THE AREA AS FAR NORTH AS NEW YORK CITY. THE SHOALS IN THE CHESAPEAKE AND DELAWARE BAYS ARE NOT IDENTICAL TO HERRMAN, AND MANY OF THE SOUNDINGS ARE DIFFERENT. THAT THORNTON USED HERRMAN AS A BASE MAP IS EVIDENT FROM THE CARTOUCHE. WITH ONLY A MINOR CHANGE, THE INDIANS ON EACH SIDE OF THE CARTOUCHE ARE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM HERRMAN'S CARTOUCHE.

THE DATE OF THE MAP IS NOT KNOWN. HELEN WALLIS INDICATES IN A PRIVATE LETTER THAT IT IS INCLUDED IN THORNTON'S ATLAS MARITIMUS, OR THE SEA-ATLAS, WHICH THE BRITISH LIBRARY CATALOGUES AS PUBLISHED IN 1704. IT IS NOT IN THE BRITISH LIBRARY'S COPY OF THIS ATLAS DATED 1700, NOR IN THE 1710 VERSION. IT CONTAINS PHILADELPHIA, WHICH MAKES IT 1682 OR LATER. TYACKE WRITES THAT THORNTON USED THE ADDRESS BETWEEN 1672-3 AND 1677-05. WILLIAM CUMMING, IN PRIVATE CORRESPONDENCE, FEELS THAT THE T. PAGE MAP ENTITLED "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, NEW JERSEY, PARTS OF NY AND CAROLINA" (REFERRED TO IN FOOTNOTE 47 OF HIS ARTICLE "EARLY MAPS OF THE CHESAPEAKE..." AND WHICH HE DATES BETWEEN 1685 AND 1702) HAS BASIC SIMILARITIES WITH THE THORNTON MAP. THE PAGE CARTOUCHE IS IN THE SAME LOCATION, BUT WITH A NEW TITLE. IN THE BOTTOM LEFT OF THE PAGE MAP IS AN INSET OF THE NORTH CAROLINA SOUNDS AREA AND THERE ARE EXTENSIVE LEGENDS AND SEVERAL HUNTING SCENE VIGNETTES WHICH DO NOT APPEAR ON THORNTON'S. HE BELIEVES IT IS A LATER EDITION OF THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. IN ALL LIKELIHOOD THIS THORNTON MAP WAS FIRST PUBLISHED BETWEEN 1682 AND 1685. THE INSET OF NEW YORK HARBOR, A LAST-MINUTE ADDITION TO THE THORNTON, MORDEN AND LEA MAP OF 1685 (SEE MAP # 185T5) APPEARS TO BE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE THORNTON MAP HEREIN DESCRIBED, SUGGESTING THAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED BEFORE 1685. INDEED, A CORRECTION IN THE LARGE SHOAL ACROSS THE ENTRANCE TO NEW YORK HARBOR WAS MADE TO THE THORNTON,MORDEN AND LEA PLATE TO MAKE IT CONFORM TO THE INSET COPIED FROM THORNTON. ED PAPENFUSE,IN PRIVATE CORRESPONDENCE, NOTES THAT IT WAS IN 1685 THAT PENN MADE HIS CLAIM FOR THE EASTERN SECTION OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA, NOW DELAWARE, AND LATER MAPS STOPPED CARRYING MARYLAND COUNTY NAMES ACROSS THE PENINSULA.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM CORRESPONDENCE WITH WALLIS, CUMMING AND PAPENFUSE.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE APPARENTLY TWO EDITIONS OF THIS MAP, OF WHICH WE BELIEVE THIS TO BE THE FIRST. THE FIRST EDITION IS ON ONE SHEET, WHEREAS THE SECOND, IN BOTH STATES, IS ON FOUR.

ED. 1 - [1682-1704] - ENTITLED "A LARGE MAPP OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, PENSYLVANIA, EAST AND WEST NEW JERSEY, & NEW YORK. BY JOHN THORNTON AT THE SIGNE OF ENGLAND SCOTLAND AND IRELAND IN THE MINORIES, LONDON." THE CARTOUCHE HAS TWO INDIAN FIGURES ON A PEDESTAL, ON EITHER SIDE OF THE TITLE. THE CARTOUCHE IS MUCH MORE SIMILAR TO THE HERRMAN CARTOUCHE THAN IS THE SECOND EDITION. THE DATE IS NOT KNOWN. IT APPEARED IN A 1704 ATLAS IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM, BUT IS LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN DONE BETWEEN 1682 AND 1685 (SEE DESCRIPTION). THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

ED. 2 - STATE 1 - [1685-1702?] - ENTITLED "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, PENSILVANIA, NEW JERSEY, PART OF NEW YORK, AND CAROLINA. SOLD BY T. PAGE...TOWER HILL." IT IS IN 4 SHEETS. THE SHOALS AND SOUNDINGS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF EDITION 1. SEE MAP # 185T7.

- STATE 2 - [1725-1728?] - THE IMPRINT IS ALTERED TO READ "SOLD BY T: PAGE & W: & F. MOUNT IN TOWER HILL". THE DATE DERIVES FROM THE TIME WHEN FISHER MOUNT WAS A MEMBER OF MOUNT & PAGE AND HAD HIS NAME IN THE FIRM'S IMPRINT. SEE MAP # 225T5.

DATA IS BASED PARTLY ON CUMMING, PARTLY ON VERNER AND PARTLY ON OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF EDITION ONE IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COPY IN ORIGINAL COLORING. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF NSOL018- H3 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-98. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS 8 X 10" GLOSSY PHOTOGRAPHS OF STATE 2, EDITION 2 OF THE COPIES IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM AND IN COLONIAL WILLIAMSBSURG, WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-410(REPRO).
