DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP EXTENDS FROM THE 40TH PARALLEL TO THE 30TH. ITS REPRESENTATION OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS RELATIVELY SMALL, BUT SHOWS A CONSIDERABLY DIFFERENT AND LESS ACCURATE DEPICTION OF THE BAY AREA THAN THE MAP ENTITLED "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND", 10 PAGES EARLIER IN MORDEN'S GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED, LONDON, 1680. THIS MAP APPEARED ON PAGE 379. THIS REPRESENTATION OF THE BAY IS BASED MORE ON THE SMITH MAP (BECAUSE OF THE WIDE DELMARVA PENINSULA) THAN ON THE AUGUSTINE HERRMAN MAP OF 1673 WHICH THE OTHER MAP IN THE ATLAS WAS TAKEN FROM (SEE MAPS 112S5 AND 173H5). COPIES ARE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, THE JOHN CARTER BROWN LIBRARY AND IN YALE.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : WRITER ONLY KNOWS OF THIS ONE EDITION OF THE MAP. THE 1688, 1693 AND 1700 EDITIONS OF MORDEN'S GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED... DO NOT CONTAIN THE MAP, BUT RATHER ANOTHER ONE ENTITLED "A NEW MAP OF CAROLINA", WHICH CUMMING CALLS A SIMPLIFIED FORM OF THE THORNTON, MORDEN AND LEA" MAP OF 1685. THE MAP IS ALSO NOT IN THE BLOME 1687 BOOK ENTITLED THE PRESENT STATE OF HIS MAJESTIES ISLES AND TERRITORIES IN AMERICA..., WHICH CONTAINED OTHER MAPS FROM THE MORDEN ATLAS.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THIS MAP WITH SOME WATER STAINING. IT IS IN THE 1680 ATLAS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF P026-T2Q* AND A MDHR # OF G1399-699.
