DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP ACCOMPANIES A CHAPTER ON VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND IN A SMALL ENGLISH ATLAS ENTITLED GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED: OF A DESCRIPTION OF THE WORLD, IN ALL ITS KINGDOMS, PROVINCES, COUNTRIES, ISLANDS, CITIES, TOWNS, SEAS, RIVERS, BAYES, CAPES, PORTS; THEIR ANTIENT (SIC) AND PRESENT NAMES, INHABITANTS, SITUATIONS, HISTORIES, CUSTOMS, GOVERNMENTS, ETC. AS ALSO THEIR COMMODITIES, COINS, WEIGHTS, AND MEASURES, COMPARED WITH THOSE AT LONDON, LONDON, 1680, PAGE 369. IT IS AN EXCELLENT MINIATURE OF THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY.

THE MAP APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN BASED MORE ON THE HERRMAN MAP THAN ON ANY OTHER BECAUSE IT HAS THE CHARACTERISTIC SOUTH-WESTWARD BEND TO THE VIRGINIA END OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA. JEANETTE BLACK THINKS THAT IT WAS PROBABLY DERIVED FROM THE HERRMAN MAP BY WAY OF THE THORNTON AND GREENE MAP OF 1678 (SEE BLACK, P. 75). IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT HALF OF THE MAP IS A LISTING OF 24 COUNTIES IN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND WITH A LETTER KEY TO REFERENCE THEM TO THE MAP ITSELF. SINCE IT IS SUCH A SMALL SCALE MAP, THIS PREVENTED THE MAP FROM BEING TOO CLUTTERED. THE MAP EXTENDS FROM LATITUDE 37 TO 40 1/4 AND THE LONGITUDE FROM ABOUT 72 TO 76 DEGREES.

THE DEDICATION OF THE ATLAS IS TO MR. THOMAS GODDARD MERCHANT OF LONDON WHO, BASED ON THE DEDICATION, MAY HAVE FINANCED THE EFFORT.

A SECOND STATE OF THIS MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN RICHARD BLOME'S THE PRESENT STATE OF HIS MAJESTIES ISLES AND TERRITORIES IN AMERICA..., LONDON, PRINTED BY H. CLARK FOR DORMAN NEWMAN IN 1687. THE MAP HAD A DIFFERENT TITLE AND EXTENSIVE NAME CHANGES WERE MADE IN THE PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW JERSEY AREAS.

THE SECOND EDITION OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED WAS PUBLISHED IN 1688. A NEW ENGRAVING OF THE MAP WAS SUBSTITUTED ON P. 561 WITH THE NEW TITLE "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA" (SEE MAP # 188M5). THE REENGRAVED MAP WAS SLIGHTLY WIDER AND HAD OTHER CHANGES. A THIRD EDITION OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED WAS PUBLISHED IN 1693, BUT THE PLATE FOR "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA" WAS UNCHANGED. THE FOURTH EDITION IN 1700 HAD THE MAP ON PAGE 591 AND A MINOR PLATE CHANGE.

DATA IS BASED ON OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF MAPS FROM THE 1ST AND SECOND EDITIONS, STATES 1 AND 2 IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION, AND FROM A PHOTOCOPY OF THE SECOND STATE OF THE FIRST EDITION FROM THE EVERGREEN HOUSE.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO EDITIONS KNOWN TO EXIST. BOTH ARE IN TWO STATES. THE SECOND EDITION IS IN THREE ISSUES.

ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1680)- THIS IS THE COPY AS DESCRIBED.

- STATE 2 - (1687)- THE TITLE OF THIS STATE WAS CHANGED TO "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA. MARYLAND. PENSILVANIA. NEW YARSEY. BY ROBt. MORDEN." THE CARTOUCHE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO JUST ABOVE THE 40TH PARALLEL. THE WORD "MARYLAND" IS PRINTED WIDELY SPACED ACROSS THE STATE, WHICH GIVES THE MAP A CONFUSING APPEARANCE, INTERSPERSED WITH THE MANY ALPHABETIC KEYS ON THE MAP. THE NAMES "PHILADELPHIA" AND "NEW YORK" ARE ADDED, AS ARE NUMEROUS NAMES ALONG THE SUSQUEHANNA, THE DELAWARE AND IN NEW JERSEY. "BETHLEM" NEAR PHILADELPHIA, AND A SURROUNDING DOTTED LINE ARE IMPERFECTLY DELETED. THE MAP APPEARED FACING PAGE 183 IN RICHARD BLOME'S THE PRESENT STATE OF HIS MAJESTIES ISLES AND TERRITORIES IN AMERICA..., LONDON, PRINTED BY H. CLARK, FOR DORMAN NEWMAN, AT THE KINGS-ARMS IN THE POULTREY, 1687. SEE MAP # 187M5.

ED. 2 - STATE 1 - ISSUE 1 - (1688) - THIS MAP WAS REENGRAVED FOR THE SECOND EDITION OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED. IT MEASURES 12.7 X 12.1 CM, ABOUT 1/2 INCH WIDER THAN EDITION 1. THE NAME HAS BEEN CHANGED TO "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA" BY ROBT MORDEN IN AN EGG SHAPED CARTOUCHE IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER, SURROUNDED BY LEAVES TIED TOGETHER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CARTOUCHE. A NEW LONGITUDE SCALE HAS BEEN ADDED AT THE BOTTOM MARGIN DESCENDING FROM EAST TO WEST FROM 305 TO 303 DEGREES (ALTHOUGH THE PLATE EXTENDS BEYOND THOSE POINTS). NO INDICATION IS GIVEN OF WHERE THIS LONGITUDE IS TAKEN FROM. THIS MAP IS ON P. 561 (SHOWN ABOVE THE MAP TO THE RIGHT). THE HEADING "A DESCRIPTION OF VIRGINIA AND MARY-LAND." IS IN THE MARGIN ABOVE THE MAP. THE LETTERS "Iiii 2" AND THE CATCHWORD "THE" ARE ON THE BOTTOM LINE. "SOMERSET C." HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE LIST OF COUNTIES TO THE RIGHT AND "LOWER NORFOLK C." HAS BEEN CHANGED TO "NORFOLK C." SEE MAP # 188M5.

- STATE 1 - ISSUE 2 - (1693) - THIS ISSUE APPEARED IN THE THIRD ED. OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED, BUT NOTHING ABOUT THE MAP OR IN THE TEXT HAS BEEN CHANGED.

- STATE 2 - (1700) - THIS APPEARED IN THE FOURTH ED. OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED. IT IS BASICALLY THE SAME MAP AS ISSUES ONE AND TWO OF THIS EDITION, EXCEPT FOR THE ADDITION OF "PAG75" IN THE LEFT TOP LONGITUDE BORDER. THE MAP NOW APPEARS ON P.591 AND THIS NUMBER IS PRINTED IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN. THE HEADING "A DESCRIPTION OF VIRGINIA AND MARY-LAND." HAS BEEN SPACED FURTHER TO THE RIGHT IN THE TOP MARGIN. THE LETTERS "Iiii 2", WHICH APPEARED IN THE FIRST AND SECOND ISSUE OF THIS EDITION, HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOTTOM LINE. SEE MAP # 200M5.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND A PHOTOCOPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, SECOND STATE, FROM THE EVERGREEN HOUSE.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A RELATIVELY STRONG IMPRESSION IN BLACK AND WHITE OF THE FIRST EDITION, STATE 1 OF THIS MAP CONTAINED IN THE ATLAS ITSELF. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF P026-T2Q* AND A MDHR # OF G1399-250. IT ALSO HAS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, STATE 2 FROM THE EVERGREEN HOUSE. IT HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF EDITION 2, STATE 1, WITH AN ACQ. # OF GS019-UUD AND A MDHR # OF G1399-60, AND A COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING OF EDITION 2, STATE 2 WITH AN ACQ. # OF JP019-HDI AND A MDHR # OF G1399-9.
