DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE SECOND EDITION OF THE MAP REFERRED TO AS "LORD BALTIMORE'S MAP", WHICH WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1635 TO ACCOMPANY A PAMPHLET ENTITLED A RELATION OF MARYLAND: TOGETHER WITH A MAP OF THE COUNTREY... (SEE MAP # 135C5). THIS 1671 EDITION IS THE ONE MOST OFTEN SEEN, SINCE THE 1635 EDITION IS EXCEEDINGLY RARE. THE OGILBY MAP APPEARS ONLY IN HIS 1671 ENGLISH EDITION OF ARNOLD MONTANUS'S DE NIEUWE EN ONBEKENDE WEERELD. WHICH HE CALLED "AMERICA". CUMMING INDICATES THAT THE COPYRIGHT TO MONTANUS'S BOOK WAS OBTAINED BY JACOB MEURS IN 1670 AND HE APPARENTLY HAD AN AGREEMENT WITH OGILBY FOR AN ENGLISH EDITION. BAER STATES THAT WHILE OGILBY'S AMERICA IS ALMOST A WORD FOR WORD TRANSLATION AND USES THE SAME MAP PLATES, IT DOES CONTAIN NEW MATERIAL, INCLUDING THIS MAP AND THE MOST COMPLETE AND ACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF MARYLAND UP TO THAT TIME. THIS EDITION IS THE FIRST TO NAME THE TEN COUNTIES TO THE EAST AND WEST OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IN MARYLAND. THE 1635 EDITION WAS THE FIRST TO NAME THE DELAWARE MAY BY THAT NAME IN A PRINTED MAP AND IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN THE FIRST TO DELINEATE THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN BOUNDARIES OF WHAT LORD BALTIMORE CONSIDERED HIS DOMAIN. THIS MAP IS THE ONLY ONE TO HAVE AN EAST TO SOUTHEAST TWIST TO THE BAY AT ITS NORTHERN END. COMPARED WITH THE FIRST EDITION, IT HAS AN EXTRA LINE OF TREES AT THE NORTHERN END OF MARYLAND AND THE BOUNDARY HAS BEEN PUSHED NORTH IN ORDER TO REFLECT LORD BALTIMORE'S CLAIM TO MORE OF PRESENT SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA.

THE MAPPING OF THE MARYLAND TERRITORY IS NOT NEARLY AS GOOD AS THAT OF SMITH, ALTHOUGH THE COMPILER EVIDENTLY HAD SEEN THAT MAP. VERNER CONCLUDES THAT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 1635 LORD BALTIMORE MAP AND THE JOHN SMITH MAP ARE SUCH AS TO SUGGEST THAT SOME ORIGINAL SURVEY WORK HAD BEEN DONE, BUT IF SO, ITS CIRCUMSTANCES ARE NOT KNOWN. ITS GEOGRAPHICAL INFLUENCE WAS APPARENTLY MINOR ON SUBSEQUENT MAPS, EXCEPT THAT THE HERRMAN MAP OF 1673 SHOWED SOME OF ITS FEATURES. HE BELIEVES THAT THE MAP IS FAR MORE SIGNIFICANT GEOGRAPHICALLY THAN IT IS USUALLY CREDITED WITH BEING. IT IS THE FIRST PRINTED MAP SPECIFICALLY OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY THAT SHOWS A MORE NATURAL SHAPE FOR THE DELMARVA PENINSULA AND A MORE ACCURATE RELATIONSHIP WITH DELAWARE BAY. THE PURPOSE OF THE ORIGINAL MAP WAS TO BE HELPFUL TO POTENTIAL IMMIGRANTS IN LOCATING SETTLEMENTS RATHER THAN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE IMPROVEMENTS IN THE SMITH DELINEATION GEOGRAPHICALLY.

FOR A FULLER DESCRIPTION, SEE MAP # 135C5.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS VIRGINIA CARTOGRAPHY, MATHEWS, E.B., MAPS AND MAP-MAKERS OF MARYLAND, AND FROM PAPENFUSE AND COALE, ATLAS OF HISTORICAL MAPS OF MARYLAND 1608-1908.

EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO EDITIONS OF THE MAP ARE KNOWN. THE FIRST WAS THE ORIGINAL THAT ACCOMPANIED THE PAMPHLET A RELATION OF MARYLAND... IN 1635. THE SECOND EDITION, IN 1671, WAS IN JOHN OGILBY'S AMERICA, TRANSLATED FROM ARNOLDUS MONTANUS' DE NIEUWE EN ONBEKENDE WEERELD, DONE THE SAME YEAR.

1ST ED.-(1635)- THE COUNTIES IN MARYLAND ARE NOT NAMED. FOR A COMPLETE INVENTORY OF THE COPIES OF THE RELATION OF MARYLAND AND THE PHYSICAL CONDITION OF EACH COPY, SEE MAP # 135C5.

2ND ED.-(1671)- THE TEN COUNTIES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY ARE NAMED IN THEIR APPROXIMATE LOCATIONS. THERE IS A CLEARER DELINEATION OF THE SMALL ISLANDS OF THE BAY. THE WORDS "MANY DEGREES" BEFORE "FARTHER SOUTHWARDS" IN THE LEGEND IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER ARE OMITTED. THE DOTTED LINE REPRESENTING THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY OF MARYLAND IS MOVED FURTHER NORTHWARD THAN IN THE FIRST EDITION AND TWO ROWS OF TREES ARE ADDED. COPIES ARE IN THE NEWBERRY, FLORIDA STATE, EVERGREEN HOUSE OF JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY, THE JOHN SNYDER AND THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTIONS, AMONG MANY OTHERS. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN EXCELLENT COPY OF THIS MAP IN OUTLINE COLORING.
