THE DELMARVA PENINSULA AND MANY INDIAN NAMES APPEAR TO BE BASED ON SMITH. SOUNDINGS ARE GIVEN IN PAMLICO SOUND FOR THE FIRST TIME, NONE ARE GIVEN IN THE CHESAPEAKE. THIS MAP IS # 101 OF VOL. 3, BOOK 6, OF THE ARCANO DEL MARE, FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1646-7 AND REPUBLISHED IN 1661. THAT THE AMERICAN MAPS MAY CLAIM PRIORITY OVER THOSE OF LAET IS SEEN IN THE DEDICATORY EPISTLE TO THIS 1661 ED., IN WHICH ANTONIO FRANCISCO LUCINI, THE ENGRAVER STATES THAT HE WORKED ON THE PLATES IN SECLUSION FOR TWELVE YEARS, USING NO LESS THAN 5,000 LBS OF COPPER IN THE MAKING.

THE ARCANO DEL MARE WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST AND RAREST OF MARINE ATLASES, WAS THE FIRST BY AN ENGLISHMAN AND WAS THE FIRST IN WHICH ALL THE MAPS WERE ON THE MERCATOR PROJECTION. THE MS. MAPS ON WHICH THE ATLAS IS BASED ARE IN THE ROYAL LIBRARY OF MUNICH. HIS SEA ATLAS SYNTHESIZES HIS KEEN KNOWLEDGE OF THE SEA. THE ATLAS WAS PROBABLY NOT A COMMERCIAL SUCCESS, BUT IS UNIQUE FOR ITS BEAUTY, INTELLECTUAL FORCE AND HIGHLY ORNAMENTAL AND DECORATIVE LETTERING.

SIR ROBERT DUDLEY (ALSO DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND, EARL OF WARWICK) LIVED FROM 1574 TO 1649. HE WAS THE ILLEGITIMATE SON OF THE EARL OF LEICESTER, THE FAVORITE OF ELIZABETH THE FIRST. HE FIRST BECAME A BUCCANEER,SACKING SPANISH TOWNS WITH SIR FRANCIS DRAKE AND VISITING THE NEW WORLD. HE MADE A VOYAGE TO THE WEST INDIES AND GUIANA IN 1594 IN THE "EARWIG" AND THE "BEAR", HIS PILOTS BEING ABRAHAM KENDAL AND JOHN DAVIES.THESE PILOTS SUPPLIED SOME OF THE INFOR- MATION FOR HIS CHARTS AND SOME ALSO PROBABLY CAME FROM HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW, HENRY CAVENDISH, THE NAVIGATOR..DUDLEY WAS FORCED TO LEAVE ENGLAND BECAUSE OF HIS RELIGION AND WENT TO ITALY, WHERE HE TOOK SERVICE WITH COSMOS II, DUKE OF TUSCANY, AND WHERE HIS MAPS WERE PUBLISHED IN ITALIAN RATHER THAN IN HIS NATIVE TONGUE.

DATA IS FROM STOKES, CUMMING, PHILLIPS ATLASES, AND HUMPHREYS.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO EDITIONS OF THE ARCANO DEL MARE (1646-7 AND 1661), BUT THE SAME PLATE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN USED WITH A SLIGHT MODIFICATION. THE SECOND ATLAS EDITION WAS PUBLISHED 12 YEARS AFTER DUDLEY'S DEATH AT THE INITIATIVE OF LUCINI AND HIS ASSOCIATE IACOPO BAGNANI.

STATE 1-(1646-7)- COMPLETE COPIES OF THE 1646-7 ATLAS IN WHICH IT APPEARED ARE IN THE L.C., CLEMENTS, AND HARVARD. IN THIS EDITION, THE MAPS WERE IN UNEQUAL SIZES. THERE IS NO "Lo.6o." ON THE BOTTOM LINE OF THE CARTOUCHE. SEE MAP # 146D5.

STATE 2-(1661)- THE ONLY CHANGE IN THE PLATE IS THE ADDITION OF "L.o6.o" (LIBRO SESTO) TO THE CARTOUCHE TITLE UNDER "CARTA.III." THE 1661 ATLAS ED. IN WHICH THIS STATE APPEARED HAD MAPS OF EQUAL FORMAT CONTAINING SIX BOOKS USUALLY BOUND IN 2 VOLUMES.
