DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP WAS COPIED FROM DE LAET'S MAP OF 1630 (SEE MAP # 130L5) ON A LARGER SCALE AND WITH THE BERMUDA INSET OMITTED. STOKES' CAREFUL ANALYSIS SHOWED THAT EXCEPT FOR SOME INSTANCES OF CARELESS COPYING, WHERE SPELLING VARIED, JANSSON COPIED ONLY FROM THIS MAP AND NOT FROM THE ORIGINAL FROM WHICH IT WAS DERIVED. THE TEXT ON THE BACK IS NEARLY IDENTICAL WITH THAT OF DE LAET. THE MAP SHOWS THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA IN THE CONTEXT OF THE WHOLE EASTERN SHORELINE FROM CAPE FEAR TO NOVA SCOTIA. THE REPRESENTATION OF THE BAY FOLLOWS SMITH.

CUMMING INDICATES THAT JANSSON PROBABLY MADE THIS MAP FOR HIS APPENDIX ATLANTIS, AMSTERDAM, 1636, AND THEN USED IT IN HIS ENGLISH EDITION OF MERCATOR'S ATLAS PUBLISHED THE SAME YEAR.

DATA IS FROM CUMMING.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION OF THIS MAP IS KNOWN, IN THREE STATES, THOUGH IT MIGHT BE CONSIDERED A LATER EDITION OF THE DE LAET MAP OF 1630. SEE VERNER'S NOTES FOR A LISTING OF THE LANGUAGES, DATES, SIGNATURES, PAGE NUMBERS AND CATCHWORDS OF EACH STATE.

1ST STATE - (1636) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED.

2ND STATE - (1647) - THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO NOVA BELGICA ET ANGLIA NOVA AND ENGRAVED DECORATIONS FOUND IN AN EARLIER BLAEU MAP WHICH HAS THE SAME TITLE BUT WHICH DOES NOT EXTEND AS FAR SOUTH WERE ADDED. THE HEART SHAPED CARTOUCHE HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A RECTANGULAR ONE WITH A STANDING MALE INDIAN TO THE LEFT AND A FEMALE INDIAN TO THE RIGHT. BELOW THE CARTOUCHE, TWO BEARS HAVE BEEN ADDED, WHILE ABOVE IS A DRAWING OF A PALISADED INDIAN VILLAGE AND A FEW OTHER DECORATIONS TAKEN FROM BLAEU'S EARLIER MAP OF THE SAME TITLE. THIS STATE WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN JANSSON'S NOVUS ATLAS: DAS IST: WELT-BESCHREIBUNG, AMSTERDAMI, 1648-1649, III, 1649.

3RD STATE-(C1710)- THIS STATE WAS PUBLISHED BY VALK AND SCHENK ABOUT 1710. IT HAS THE SAME TITLE AS STATE 2. JANSSON'S SIGNATURE HAS BEEN POORLY ERASED, AND UNDER AMSTELODAMI IS: APUD G. VALK, ET P. SCHENK. DOTTED LINES WERE ADDED AS BOUNDARIES FOR POLITICAL DIVISIONS AS WERE DEGREES OF LONGITUDE, OMITTED IN THE PRIOR STATES. VERNER DATES THIS STATE AS "AFTER 1700 AND PROBABLY ABOUT 1709". A COPY OF THIS STATE IS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AS A SEPARATE.

DATA IS FROM CUMMING AND VERNER.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING OF STATE 1 OF THIS MAP. BASED ON THE VERNER DATA, THE MAP IS FROM THE FRENCH LANGUAGE ATLASES DATED IN ONE OF THE FOLLOWING YEARS: 1639, 1640, 1641 OR 1642. IT HAS A SIGNATURE OF "ddddd" AND A CATCHWORD OF "UNE". THERE IS NO WATERMARK ON THE HFC COPY.
