DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN FOUR STATES IN THE VARIOUS EDITIONS OF THE JOHN SMITH BOOK, DATED 1624, 1625, 1626, 1627, 1631, AND 1632, THE GENERALL HISTORIE OF VIRGINIA, NEW=ENGLAND, AND THE SUMMER ILES, LONDON, BETWEEN PP. 20-21 OR 40-41. THE MAP IS ON THE SAME PAGE AS SCENES DEPICTING EVENTS IN SMITH'S TIME IN VIRGINIA.

THE MAP COVERS PRIMARILY THE NORTH CAROLINA-VIRGINIA AREA, BUT, LIKE THE WHITE MAP OF 1590 (SEE MAP 090W5), IT GOES ONLY AS FAR NORTH AS THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. ALTHOUGH MANY OF WHITE'S 1590 NAMES ARE RETAINED, NUMEROUS CHANGES WERE MADE AND NAMES WERE GIVEN TO BOTH REAL AND IMAGINED TOPOGRAPHICAL FEATURES. WHITE CALLED THE WHOLE AREA "VIRGINIA". THE MAP HAD VERY LITTLE INFLUENCE ON THE CARTOGRAPHICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE REGION IT COVERS, SINCE HIS NAMES ON THE MAP WERE NOT USED BY LATER MAP MAKERS. WHEN SMITH'S MAP OF 1612 DESIGNATED A NEW VIRGINIA, THE ORIGINAL AREA DEPICTED BY WHITE BECAME KNOWN AS "OULD VIRGINIA", A NAME WHICH CONTINUED IN USE THROUGH 1646 ON THE DUDLEY CHART.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM CUMMING AND VERNER.
