NORTH YORKSHIRE RESEARCH
by Leigh Bond

Under the direction of Dr. Papenfuse and in conjunction with an internship at Kiplin Hall, the ancestral home of the Calverts, I researched the management and operation of 17th century Yorkshire estates, focusing on records pertaining to the Calvert family and Kiplin Hall. I also attempted to locate records relating to the trust fund established for Elizabeth Calvert.

Three visits to the North Yorkshire County Record Office provided me with copies of several documents illustrating the administration of Kiplin Hall and neighboring estates, and a publication entitled, "Documents Relating to the Swaledale, Estates of Lord Wharton in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries." The book contains letters, maps, charts, and accounts of the management of the North Yorkshire estates owned by Lord Wharton, to whom the Calverts were tenants until they purchased the Kiplin estate in 1620. It includes two letters written by a Thomas Calvert, whose place on the Calvert family tree is unknown. The other documents include conveyances (bargains and sales), indentures, bonds, exemplifications of fines, and marriage agreements, all of which involve the Calverts and their land holdings in Kiplin, Moulton, and Catterick (Danby Wiske is not mentioned). Several contain fairly complete descriptions of the Kiplin estate, including the number of acres in meadows, tillage, orchards, and pastures. Although the Calverts sold the Kiplin estate to Christopher Crowe in 1721, records indicate that they continued to collect (and in some cases pay) debts and fines from various tenants for a number of years afterward.

Sir George Calvert, Charles Calvert, and Benedict Leonard Calvert are the only three Lords Baltimore to appear in the records collected; no mention is made of Cecil Calvert. Very few records of the Calvert family are kept in the record office in Northallerton. Ms. Janet Smeaton, Deputy County Archivist of Yorkshire, informed me that the vast majority of the records begin with the Crowe family. It is unlikely that many of the Calvert records survive. However, Professor David Fogle of the University of Maryland at College Park suggested that some family records might be housed in an archives in the town of Epsom, outside of London. Supposedly, some of the Calvert family lived near Epsom between 1620 and 1720. Efforts to do research at the Epsom archives were not successful. I then visited St. Giles-of-the-Fields, where several members of the Calvert family are buried. Rev. Gordon Taylor, the rector, was on holiday, so I arranged to speak with his assistant. Hoping that he could shed some light on Elizabeth Calvert and the trust fund, I asked several questions, only to find out that he had never heard of her. Indeed, according to the burial registers, she is not even buried at St. Giles. I did record the names and death dates of the Calverts who are buried there.

Hopefully, my research and experiences in North Yorkshire and in London will provide a greater understanding of the seventeenth century Yorkshire world and a new direction for the further exploration and investigation of the Calvert family's place in it.

AN UNUSUAL INVENTORY
by Pat Melville

Edward Pye arrived in Maryland by 1682 as a free adult, taking up residence in Charles County, and shortly thereafter married the stepdaughter of Charles Calvert, 3rd Lord Baltimore. During the next seven years he served as a member of the Upper House and the Council, justice of the Provincial Court, member of the Board of Deputy Governors, supervisor of town officers in Charles County, and colonel in the army. By his death in 1696 he had accumulated over 5,000 acres of land and personal property worth almost 1,200 pounds sterling, including a large map "of the whole world."

Most inventories of personal property taken after a person's death list individual items and their values. One of the inventories of Pye's estate specifies document containers without monetary values. Perhaps this was a way to show the existence of information about the financial affairs of Pye. Later entries in (Testamentary Proceedings) do show the appointment of appraisers to determine the debts owed to and by the estate. The short inventory of papers is transcribed below. If only the documents themselves still existed.

An Inventory of such Bookes Letters & other Papers belonging to said Estate of Col. Edward Pye late of Charles County Deceased,
