In June 2008, the Task Force to Study a No Net Loss of Forest Policy was authorized (Chapter 176, Acts of 2008). The Task Force was charged with developing a plan of specific programs and actions so Maryland can establish and maintain a policy of no further loss of forests. Further, the Task Force drafted legislation for the 2009 General Assembly session to implement a plan to achieve no net loss of forest in Maryland beginning in 2010.

In January 2009, the Task Force reported to the Governor and General Assembly. Authorization for the Task Force extended through May 31, 2009.
