Statistical Analysis of Research Results Relating to
Potomac River Tracts
(Last Updated February 2, 2001)
Appendix one consists of three tract lists and maps that detail survey
of non-tidal Potomac River patents.
For presentation purposes, the lists and maps cover three distinct geographical
sections of the non-tidal Potomac River between Washington D.C. and the
Maryland / West Virginia border in Garret County Maryland.

Section 2 |

Section 3 |

The maps are numbered in series based upon their geographical section
and the sequence in which the maps were generated during the mapping process
(e.g. The first map in section 1 is known as Map nontidal1-1. Subsequent
maps from the same section are numbered sequentially: the next map from
section 1 is known as Map nontidal1-2.)
In each section, the first map provides an overview of all tracts located
along the Potomac River. Subsequent maps display tracts located along
the Potomac that have at least one of the following characteristics:
-
The survey extends to the Virginia shore of the Potomac River.
-
The survey includes land that is an island in the Potomac River.
-
The survey includes a portion of the land under the banks of the Potomac.
Item numbers (randomly generated during the mapping process) are displayed
on the maps only for those tracts that were identified as reaching the
Virginia shore, include an island in the river, and cover a portion of
water and land under the water of the Potomac. See the chart below, entitled
Potomac
River Tracts, for a statistical analysis of the tracts meeting this
criteria. Following the chart is a list of the tracts that gives
the item number, map it is located on, the Maryland State Archives document
citation, and a link to the digital image of the document.
Maps
The maps are used to give the location of the tracts relevant to this
report. A key is provided on each map that details the geographical area
covered, the time period covered, the information on the map, and the scale.
The majority of the maps display tract numbers, which correspond
to the tract list provided below. In areas that have a high concentration
of tracts there are several maps that detail the same area but display
a separate time period.

Of the 6 tracts reaching the Virginia
shore, Mount Vernon MO 305 was corrected because it included land previously
patented at the Great Falls.
-
Acreage total does not include 143 acres
from Mount Vernon MO 305.
-
There are 28 tracts that include islands.
Some tracts have more than one island or were surveyed in parts.
Figures in this column are for tracts that have islands in their
surveys.
-
Total of 39 includes 6 tracts that reach
the Virginia Shore (three of which are also islands and included
in the island count, but only counted once for statistical purposes), 5
tracts that extend into the river, and 28 tracts that include islands.
-
There are 31 tracts that include islands.
Some tracts have more than one island or were surveyed in parts.
Figures in this column are for tracts that have islands in their
surveys.
-
Total of 41 includes 9 tracts that reach
the Virginia Shore (three of which are also islands and included
in the island count, but only counted once for statistical purposes), 1
tract that extends into the river, and 31 tracts that include islands.
-
Total of 4 includes 4 tracts that reach
the Virginia Shore.
General Notes:
There are many more island tracts that have not been plotted
because they were patented after 1862.
Work below Washington DC suspended in order to focus on tracts
above tidewater.
Islands are tracked separately because their metes and bounds
usually cover the area of the island exposed at low tide. The islands are
not included in figures for Tracts Bordering the Potomac, but
are included when applicable for
Tracts to the
Virginia Shore.
The remaining tracts in the database are entries that do
not border River, have not been completed yet, have not been plotted with
reasonable certainty, or were used to correct magnetic variations.
Very little work done in Garrett County to date.
About Tracts in the Potomac
-
The following information is vital to understanding the number
of tracts that are categorized under Tracts in the Potomac. Several
tracts that lie in the Potomac may be attributed to surveying errors and
were later resurveyed in order to remove the area foul of the river, they
are not included in the count for tracts extending into the river. Some
tracts appear to be in the river, however, this may be the case due to
erosion.
