Biography:

Jerry was an enslaved boy who was owned by Benjamin Phillips of Fishing Creek in Dorchester County, Maryland. Jerry was the son of Jerry and Martha, two enslaved people who were also the property of Benjamin Phillips. On or about September 14, 1814, Jerry and his family were taken away by British soldiers, from the home of Benjamin Phillips. At the time Jerry was 2 or 3 years of age and worth $100.

Following the war Benjamin Philips filed a claim for his five slaves with B. L. Lear an agent who submitted the evidence to the Department of State. Maryland slave owners were awarded $280 for each slave they lost during the war.
