Biography:

Martha was an enslaved woman who was owned by Benjamin Phillips of Fishing Creek in Dorchester County, Maryland. Martha was the wife of Jerry and the mother of three children, Joseph, Mary and Jerry. On or about September 14, 1814, Martha and her family were taken away by British soldiers, from the home of Benjamin Phillips. At the time Martha was 23 or 24 years of age and worth $250.

Following the war Benjamin Philips filed a claim for his five slaves with B. L. Lear an agent who submitted the evidence to the Department of State. Maryland slave owners were awarded $280 for each slave they lost during the war.
