Biography:

Andrew Calvert was an enslaved man who was owned by William Sasscer of Prince George’s County. Andrew Calvert worked as a waiter at the Sasscer home.

In 1814, Andrew Calvert escaped from Sasscer to the British. Calvert was seen on board a British vessel lying at Benedict. At the time of his escape, Andrew Calvert was 16 years old and valued at $400.

When the war was over, citizens of the United States filed claims with the Department of State for the loss of property at the hands of the British. Calvert’s former owner William Sasscer died in 1821.  Thomas Sasscer, son of William Sasscer became the executor of the estate and would file the claim for indemnity. The estate of William Sasscer was awarded $280 for the loss of Andrew Calvert.
