James Stith
MSA SC 5496-51115
War of 1812 Refugee, Charles County, Maryland

Biography:

James Stith was an enslaved man who was owned by Benjamin T. Fendall of Charles County, Maryland. Stith worked as a sailor on his masters vessel.

In 1814, six of Fendall's slaves, including James Stith, escaped from his farm in Charles County. Two enslaved men, Peter Bell and Fidelio, belonging to Josias B. Ford and a family of five belonging to Fendall also escaped with James Stith. The slaves boarded a British Vessel and were carried to Halifax, Nova Scotia. James Stith's work as a sailor on his master's vessel had made him familiar with sailing up and down the Potomac River and able to assist the British.
