William Carter

Biography:

William Carter was an enslaved man who was owned by Nathaniel Washington of St. Mary's County, Maryland. William worked as a shoe maker and carpenter. 

On July 20, 1814 William Carter escaped from his master to the British. At this time America was at war with Great Britain. William Carter went into the service of the British, assisting them in taking a parcel of tobacco. When the war ended Bill was never seen or heard from by Nathaniel Washington. 

According to Nathaniel Washington, William Carter was 30 years of age and worth an estimated $500 at the time of his escape.
