War of 1812 Refugee, St. Mary's County, Maryland, 1814

Biography:

Henry Young lived on Sotterley Plantation in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, as one of Colonel John R. Plater’s slaves. At age 13, Henry escaped from Sotterley between July 22 and July 25, 1814 by boarding the Frigate Severn, captained by Joseph Nourse, in the Patuxent River. Henry was one of 49 slaves to escape from Sotterley during the War of 1812 and one of 44 slaves from Sotterley to escape via the Frigate Severn. He escaped along with several other slaves who shared his surname including Catherine S. Young, Crowley Young, Daniel Young, Mary Young, John Young, and Mary Ann Young.1 Henry retained his freedom after the war and is listed with Mary Ann Young as one of the Black children refugees in Halifax aged 1 to 13 who were not living with their families.2
