Biography:

Charlotte Handy was the slave of Miel Wise in St. Mary's County, MD. Charlotte and her husband William Handy escaped to the British Ships during the War of 1812. Her husband William, who was owned by James Hopewell also of St. Mary's County, became a member of the Colonial Marines. Charlotte and William were  sent to the Tangier Island Camp, off the coast of Virginia, for a period of time. While on the Tangier Island, Charlotte gave birth to a son, William Handy, Jr., on September 08, 1814.

Following the war members of the Colonial Marines were offered land in Trinidad. William moved Charlotte and their family to the island.
