Biography:

Suckey Coates was an enslaved child who was owned by Elizabeth Ballard of Calvert County, Maryland. Suckey was born to a free man by the name of Jesse Coates alias Jesse Roberts and an enslaved woman Betty Coates who was also owned by Elizabeth Ballard. In 1814, at the age of one Suckey's mother Betty carried her off to British barges lying in the Patuxent River. Suckey's grandparents Charles and Sarah Stewart, an uncle Adam Green,  and her aunts Eliza, Juliet, Jane, and Rebecca also escaped from Mrs. Ballard who was up in age. Suckey's father did not leave with them when they escaped to the British.
