Biography:

    In 1817, Jones slave Harry was indicted, arraigned, and found guilty along with four other slaves in St. Mary's county for insurrection. The rebellion took place April 7, 1816 in Leonardtown, MD. The slaves were sentenced to be hanged, but the slaves were pardoned due to the large support of the community who requested that Governor Charles C. Ridgely, commute the sentence of death. Instead the five slaves were taken to the Apelousas and sold as slaves for life for the benefit of the state of Maryland.
