Violetta Hungerford (b. circa ? - d. circa ?)
MSA SC 5496-050743
War of 1812 Claimant, Charles County, Maryland, 1828

Biography:

Violetta Hungerford iwas a property owner who lived in Charles County, MD. Hungerford owned land and slaves.

In 1814, one of Hungerford’s slaves, Hendley Hall, escaped to British ships in the Potomac river. At this time the United States was at war with Great Britain. Hendley Hall was one of many slaves that escaped to British ships. The wife of Hendley, whose name is unknown, also fled from her owner, Thomas Tubman. Hendly boarded the British squadron under the command of Captain Gordon while they were ascending the Potomac River on the way to Alexandria, Virginia.

Following the war Maryland property owners submitted claims for the loss of their slaves and personal property. A commission was formed through the Department of State to handle the claims. Violetta Hungerford died before the claims could be filed. Her heirs, Juliet and John W. Hungerford, filed a claim for the loss of Hendly.
