MSA SC 5496-050663
War of 1812 Claimant, St. Mary's County, Maryland

Biography:

Henderson S. Boteler was a property owner who lived in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Henderson Sim Boteler, a doctor, was born in Maryland about 1774. Henderson Boteler married Susannah Hawkins, daughter of George F. and Susanna Hawkins, on November 7, 1799 in Prince George's County. Boteler and his wife initially lived in Charles County, MD and later relocated to Charlotte Hall in St. Mary's County.

Boteler owned a small labor force at his property consisting of at least 8 slaves. Boteler purchased four slaves, Bett, Little Bett, Lett, and Judson from Thomas Marshall and John Forbes, executors of Elizabeth Forbes. The executors later issued a petition to the courts claiming that Boteler and his wife did not pay for the slaves.

During the War of 1812 one of Boteler’s enslaved men, Judson Fulson, was carried away by the British. William Kilgour, a neighbor, saw his slaves in company with Judson and the slave of Nathaniel Washington. He instructed them all that they should return to their owners. Judson Fulson responded to Kilgour, telling him that “he was not going to work for white men for nothing.” The British plundered Boteler’s home taking medical equipment, household furnishings, and livestock.
