Biography:

The mother of Caroline Hammond was a slave owned by Thomas Davidson, a wealthy landowner in Anne Arundel County.  In the late 1850s or early 1860s, she married a free man named George Berry and fled to Pennsylvania.  She moved to Baltimore in 1869.
