Ned Dodson (b. circa 1821 - d. ?)
MSA SC 5496-9283
Fled from slavery, Prince George's County, Maryland, 1844
Biography:
Roderick McGregor placed an advertisement in the Daily National Intelligencer seeking information about a group of five runaway slaves from his plantation on the morning of November 23, 1844. Ned Dodson, a twenty-three year old, 5'4" slave, was one of the runaway slaves. McGregor purchased Ned from Dr. Joseph Edelen's estate, near Piscataway, where he was believed to have attempted to return. Dodson ran away along with Anthony Chase, a twenty-eight year old, 5'5" tall slave with a scar on his right arm and foot from burns he received as a child; and Hanson Shaw, a sixteen year old, 5'5" slave whose mother was owned by Mr. William Coats, who resided on the plantation of Thomas B. Crauford. All of them took clothes with them when they fled. McGregor also advertised for the return of Henry Buchannan and Tom Vermillion. After a previous attempt to escape in May 1838, this was the second time those two slaves had run away.
