Hester Tilden (b. circa ? - d. circa ?)
MSA SC 5496-3075
Fled from Slavery, Queen Anne's County, Maryland, 1855

Biography:

Hester Tilden fled from her enslavement on Richard Bennett Carmichael's farm in the Wye District, along her infant, whose name is not currently known. They escaped with the slaves Lucy Johnson, Maria Johnson, William Johnson, and Robert Tilden. They were aided by Phoebe Myers, a free African American. The escape failed, and Myers was sent to the Maryland Penitentiary.1

The 1850 slave schedule for Richard Bennett Carmichael listed three male slaves (age twenty-four, fourteen, and ten), and four female slaves (ages twenty, eighteen, twelve, and nine).2 However, the slave schedules only recorded age, race, and sex, so the names are unknown.
