Fled from Slavery, Queen Anne's County, Maryland, 1855
Biography:
Charles Tilden fled from his enslavement on Richard Bennett Carmichael's farm in the Wye District, along with the slaves Lucy Johnson, Maria Johnson, William Johnson, Robert Tilden, Hester Tilden, and Hester's infant. They were aided by Phoebe Myers, a free African American. The escape failed, and Myers was sent to the Maryland Penitentiary.1
The 1850 slave schedule for Richard Bennett Carmichael listed three
male slaves (age twenty-four, fourteen, and ten), and four female slaves
(ages twenty, eighteen, twelve, and nine).2 However, the slave
schedules only recorded age, race, and sex, so the names are unknown.
