Mayor and City Council of Baltimore v. William H. Hoffman & Sons, 1882, p. 167, case no. 4721
Filed 6 June 1882. The city accussed the Hoffmans of dumping sulphuric acid and bleach into the Gunpowder River at the Marble Vale mill, also sewage from the factory's bathroom, leaving the water in the river "so discolored and impregnated with hurtful substances and the filth from their said privy..." City requested that the Hoffmans be enjoined from dumping these substances into the river.  The Hoffmans claimed that BA Circuit Court had no jurisdiction, and that they had been using these chemicals for many years, and that the water was hardly impacted at all. They also argued that BC was changing the principle use of the river from how it had been used for many years. Outcome not recorded.
