In answer to your questions, there is no more information about the Maryland connection other than the heading at the top of the invoice (attached). The invoice is one of a bundle of papers in a private collection in Sheffield, and it is not possible to say from the scraps there whether the goods on the invoice were traded in Maryland, or whether (more likely) they went on to a Boston trader called Edmund Quincy, of Stoughtenham, with whom the Sheffield merchant Joseph Wilson was in partnership (the partnership came to grief when a consignment of goods - which may or may not have been those in this invoice - were claimed as his alone by EQ, leaving Wilson's young son and agent, who had accompanied a consignment, to return empty handed to Sheffield. The problem for the historian is that there were two consignments of roughly equal size sent in the same year, and there is insufficient documentation surviving to know what happened to each. The second one went from Hull straight to Boston, but there is no invoice for it, only a reference to insuring it for over £2000. The names of WDJ do not appear in any of the documents here. I am sending a transcription of the invoice, but I would not want it to be published at this stage, partly because it is the property of someone else, partly because I am hoping to use it myself in a forthcoming publication, and partly because as far as I know it is the only surviving invoice of Sheffield goods to America of the period - and is therefore important. I hope that these conditions will not make it of too little use to you. You will find a article by me on him in the Maryland Historical Magazine, but it will not provide any insight into this particular debt. You may find something on the firm in the Audit Office Papers that involve Loyalist claims against Americans. I would like to see the invoice. At present I do not know of any Maryland connections other than the one you found with Ashburner and Place. With whom were they trading in Maryland? I have written about the largest importing firm in this period (Wallace Davidson and Johnson) and have not run across their importing Sheffield goods via this firm. I would like to know if they did. Jack Price has placed his editon of the WDJ letter books on line at the London Record Society. If you have not checked there already for your firm, you may want to look there as well. I have also placed the order books on line at http://www.editonline.us I look forward to hearing further from you. I am researching the 18th century industries of Sheffield, and have come across documents indicating a very large order of Sheffield goods (tools and cutlery) which was sent from Liverpool (the usual port for our goods to go to America at that time) to Messrs Ashburner and Place in 1773. I wonder if there are any documents in your archives that would enable me to know more about the firm of Ashburner and Place. This order is unique in my research (of several years) in that it is for Sheffield goods only, and is extremely large - the equivalent of about $500,000 in today's money. If you would like me to send you a copy of the invoice, which runs to several pages, I would be able to do so, and of course if I could trade some information I would all the more ready to send it!
