I am researching the 18th century industries of Sheffield, and have come across documents indicating a very large order of Sheffield goods (tools and cutlery) which was sent from Liverpool (the usual port for our goods to go to America at that time) to Messrs Ashburner and Place in 1773. I wonder if there are any documents in your archives that would enable me to know more about the firm of Ashburner and Place. This order is unique in my research (of several years) in that it is for Sheffield goods only, and is extremely large - the equivalent of about $500,000 in today's money. If you would like me to send you a copy of the invoice, which runs to several pages, I would be able to do so, and of course if I could trade some information I would all the more ready to send it! I look forward to hearing from you Yours sincerely Simon Barley
