The Chairman presented the following bills for engineering expenses, boad, team-hire, stakes, drawing materials and instrument, and on motion of Dr. Clark, seconded by Dr Remsen, the payment of said bills was authorized. Townsend and Beets for the purpose of registering at their homes, and also asked for instructions regarding the leave of absence of members of the surveying corps for the purpose cf going to their homes to vote. Dr. Remsen moved that hereafter permission be given employees to register and vote, allowing reasonable time for the performance of such duty, and that no deduction be made in their salaries. The motion was seconded by Mr Hutton and adopted. The Chairman notified the Commission that Mr. John H. Williarr.a, Rodman, was reported off duty one day on account of sickness, and on motion of Dr. Clark, seconded by Governor Ccthers, it was ordered that no deduction be made for the time he was sick. The Chairir.an reported that Mr James M, Douglas had quit the service of the Commission as Chief-of-Party, and that Mr. Roger "B. Irwin of Westminster, Carroll County, had been selected to fill the vacancy. On motion of Dr. Clark, seconded by Mr. Hutton, the appointment of Mr Irwin as Chief-of-Party was confirmed. The Chairman called the attention of the Commission to the question of salary of Mr. W. F. Lankford as Instrument man. And in answer to an inquiry by Mr. Shoemaker, the Chief Engineer stated that the other Instrument men were just as well qualified for their positions as Mr. Lankford, and suggested that all be paid alike.
