Baltimore History from Colonial Times to the Present (CSPI)

In this course students examine the history of Baltimore City from its earliest settlements to the present. Topics for discussion include the persistent conflict between the city and state over the allocation of resources, the emergence of a civic consciousness and its consequences, the effects of a progressively expanded electorate, the dynamics of economic expansion and social reform, and the consequences of heavy reliance on federal funding to solve local problems. To gain perspective, students compare Baltimore's history with that of other major American cities such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
