Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was one of eleven children of the Reverend Lyman Beecher. In 1836 she married Calvin Ellis Stowe (1802-1886), an accomplished Biblical scholar. Harriet carved out a career as a writer while raising seven children and dealing with Calvin's frequent bouts of depression and traveling engagements on seminary business. After the success of Uncle Tom's Cabin and the publication of images inaccurately depicting her likeness, she sat for a number of daguerreotype portraits.
