TWENTIETH CENTURY FLAGS No. 41 - Maryland State Flag This Maryland flag was purchased in 1901 for the Chief Executive of the State, and was first used by Governor John Walter Smith at the inauguration of President William Mc-Kinley. Displayed by succeeding Governors until 1908, it was also carried or flown at the Charleston, St. Louis and Jamestown Expositions, at the inauguration of President Theodore Roosevelt, and at several summer encampments of the Maryland National Guard. MARYLAND NATIONAL GUARD No. 42-A - Fourth Infantry Regiment Maryland National Guard National Flag This is a forty-eight star national flag of the Fourth Infantry Regiment of the Maryland National Guard, a unit organized in 1885, which saw service on the Mexican Border in 1916 and during World War I was merged with other state units to form the 115th Infantry and the 110th Field Artillery Regiments, 29th Division. No. 42-B - Fourth Infantry Regiment Maryland National Guard Regimental Color This is the regimental color of the Fourth Infantry Regiment, Maryland National Guard. With the flag labeled 42-A it was turned over to the State immediately after the formation of the 115th Infantry Regiment early in World War I. MARYLAND NAVAL MILITIA No. 43-A - Maryland Naval Militia Navy Flag This silk Navy flag of the Maryland Naval Militia was probably an armory flag. The unit was mobilized upon the declaration of war April 6, 1917, and entrained three days later for the Philadelphia Navy Yard. From there the members were assigned to many ships and stations as the need for personnel arose. No. 43-B - Maryland Naval Militia State Flag This flag was carried by the Maryland Naval Militia immediately prior to World War I. — 26 —
