flanked with draped Confederate colors on the obverse and a circle of thirteen gold stars on the reverse. The stars, of a uniform size, are white except for a gold one that may have represented Maryland. No. 34-C - Second Maryland Infantry Battalion Confederate Color This flag was another color of the Second Maryland Infantry Battalion, C.- S. A. It is of the stars and bars design, but the gold stars of the circle in the blue canton number fifteen. Of the three previous colors it is known only that one was presented to the State by Mrs. William T. Thelin, Baltimore, and two by the Board of Governors of the Maryland Line. No. 34-D - Second Maryland Infantry Battle Flag The battle flag of the Second Maryland Infantry Battalion, this flag follows the design of the traditional Confederate Battle Flag, with a blue St. Andrews cross on a red field. In each of two arms of the cross a star has been obliterated, leaving only eleven. At the center of the cross is the designation "1 Md. B." Also stencilled on the flag are the battle credits "Winchester No. 2" and "Gettysburg." Carried in the attack on Gulp's Hill at Gettysburg, this flag is believed to have been the only Confederate color carried into the Union lines in that engagement without being lost. It was presented to the State by Mrs. William T. Thelin of Baltimore. No. 35 - Company B ("Maryland Guard") 21st Virginia Infantry Company Color This was the company color of Capt. J. Lyle Clark's Company B, "Maryland Guard," a unit that served in the 21st Virginia Infantry Regiment. Of the general stars and bars design, it carries in the blue canton a circle of twelve stars of uniform aize. The one star shown only in outline may have represented Maryland. Shortly after participating in the Valley Campaign, the unit was disbanded. The color was presented to the State by Mary Lyle Clark of Baltimore. No. 36-A - First Maryland Cavalry Battle Flag This Confederate battle flag was carried by the First Maryland Cavalry, C. S. A. — 24 —
