CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE FLAGS AND COLORS No. 29 - Confederate Garrison Flag This large Confederate garrison flag—6' hoist by 9' fly-made in the design popularly known as the Stars and Bars, flew over Camp St. Mary's, Hanover Junction, Va., from November, 1863, to May 1864. The camp was the winter headquarters for the Maryland Brigade, a unit made up of the 1st Maryland Infantry Battalion, the 1st Maryland Cavalry and the Baltimore Light Artillery. Their united service was brief and included no major action. The design consists of three broad horizontal stripes—red, white, and red—with a blue canton in which eleven white stars of uniform size are arranged in a circle. The flag was presented to the State November 12,1907, by Mrs. George Thomas of St. Mary's County, Maryland. No. 30 - Confederate Garrison Flag (Unit Unknown) Similar in design to the standard labeled 29, this Confederate garrison flag was presented to the State, November 12, 1907 by Mary Lyle Clark of Baltimore. Its history is unknown. No. 31 - First Regiment, Maryland Infantry Regimental Color ("Bucktail Flag") This small infantry regimental color, about 2' hoist by 2i/2' fly, is the so-called "Bucktail Flag," perhaps the best known Maryland Confederate standard. The obverse bears the inscription on a red ribbon: "Presented by the Ladies of Baltimore to the 1st Regiment Maryland Inf." while the reverse carries the 1854 version of the State coat of arms. To the blue damask silk color is attached a bucktail as authorized by General Richard Ewell to commemorate the unit's victory over the Pennsylvania "Bucktail Rifles" near Harrisonburg, Virginia, June 6, 1862. The color was given to the First Maryland Infantry Regiment by Hetty Gary of Baltimore through Lieutenant Nicholas Snowden immediately before it went into action at First Manassas, Virginia, July 21, 1861. It was presented to the State November 12, 1907 by Bradley S. Johnson of Rock Castle, Va. No. 32 - First Regiment, Maryland Infantry Regimental Color ("Frederick Flag") This so-called "Frederick Flag" of the First Maryland Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army, is somewhat larger than the bucktail standard. The blue obverse carries — 22 —
