The privilege of going as an unbroken organization was accorded to the Fifth Regiment, that being the oldest regiment. The First Regiment was asked if they were willing to supply the batteries, and Colonel William P. Lane, in behalf of his regiment, replied that they were ready to respond to any call and would furnish men where they were needed.
