     Carpenters Work

The Contractor for carpenters work
will be required to furnish and erect
all scaffolding necessary to be used in
connection with plastering, painting,
and kalsomining in dome and rotun-
da or entrance hall for which purpose
the old flooring to be removed may
be used as far as practicable, and to
such extent as may insure sufficient
strength and security.
He will also be required to cover
and protect handrail and such
other portions of stairway as may
be deemed necessary to be so protec-
ted from injury during the progress
of the work.
The stairway to be thoroughly se-
cured at upper landings by means
 of bolts through wall, taking hold
of rail and top of strong  [carraige?]and  drawn
into original position at wall and
otherwise strengthened of found
necessary.  Every portion of rail,
steps, risers and [newell?] to be care-
fully examined and all defects
removed, joints drawn together,
made fair and smooth, and in all
essential particulars restored as
near as possible to original condition
All necessary grounds, brackets, and
furring to be furnished and properly
kept up to guide plasterer in his
portion of the work.
All columns to be thoroughly repair-
ed, and new wooden bases to be made
for the same (excepting where marble
may be substituted at floor) includ-
ing those of small columns now con
structed of plaster and all, and
every portion to be securely fasten
ed together and to walls.
Four new half columns and pedes
tals against wall to be made to
conform strictly in form with
those already in position.
All windows, doors, architraves, &c,
to be put in perfect condition such
suitable mouldings to be added
to architraves as shall be necessary
to make a finish in harmony with
original design.
Side arches in corridors leasing
to Executive Chamber and Court
of Appeals to be guarded by a neatly
constructed gas pipe rail, suitably
curved at ends and secured to
walls by expansion bolts though
end peated?
Said guards to consist each of 2
rails not less than 1 1/2 inches in diam
eter, the top rail at a height of 2.8" to
3.0" from floor, and the other or
lower rail 10 or 12 inches below it,
and to be supported in middle by
two balusters at proper intervals.
The top rail to be in one continu-
ous length and to pass through thim-
bles securely fastened to clausters,
the lower rail to be of 3 sections,
and connected to balusters, which
will extend from top rail to floor,
as per sketch annexed.

All necessary hardware to be fur-
noshed by contractor of similar
character and design to that
adjacent and in quality the best
of its kind.
The lumber used in repair of
old work and in construction
of new to be of best quality thor-
oughly seasoned and clear of sap,
knots, shakes and all other defects.
The  purport and intent of these
specifications, being that all work
done and furnished shall in all
respects conform to and restore
in its entirety the original design
of said dome and rotunda.
All work to be subject to the in-
spection, approval or rejection
of John E .Marshal or his authorized, adj. whose de-
scision shall be final
    The Contractor shall be required
to perform the above described
work, in the shortest possible
time and with all reasonable
dispatch and clean up and re-
move all debris that shall have
accumulated and at the com-
pletion and acceptance of the
same, that amount of contract shall be
paid in lawful money on pre
sentation of bill properly attes-
ted by John E. Marshall or his
authorized agent
Should it be desired to shut out
from view, the exterior windows
on either side of doorway
and in gallery, it shall be effected
by the construction of 2 doors, one
on either side of entry with panels
at bottom corresponding to central
door; and with sash on top constist
ing of one of more lights of enam-
eled glass of such pattern and de-
sign as shall admit as much light
as possible, and, at the same time
exclude from view the windows
outside.  Door to be properly
hung and to open toward out-
side windows.
Also to construct a sash in one
or more pieced to fill space between
rail of gallery and archway over
said sash to be made to rise be-
hind wall by means of weights or
crank, or if practicable to slide
so as to open gallery to view
when desirable.

        Gentlemen
                           I will furnish all
material and labor required
to execute and make complete
all the carpenters work described
in Specification No1 and I will
give the same my constant
personal attention, and will
push forward the work with
all possible dispatch and will
use by best effort and judge-
ment to make all said work
harmonize with that part of
the work now in position, and
in preservation of original de-
sign.
Fir the sum of Eight-hundred and nineteen Dollars
No part of contract price to
be demanded until all said
work shall have been comple-
ted and accepted by John E.
Marshall or his authorized agent.
