ADJUTANT GENERAL
(Muster Rolls)
1860-1867
S936
Official rosters of Maryland militia in Union service. Includes muster and descriptive, muster-in, and muster-out rolls. The descriptive muster lists soldier's name, rank, age, place of birth, occupation, when and where enlisted, period of enlistment, hair and eye color, skin complexion, height, when and where mustered-in, bounty amount, residence, Congressional district, date of first muster, and unit assigned. Muster-in rolls primarily list only name, rank, age, when and where mustered-in, and mustering officer. Muster-out rolls list pay statements indicating whether a bounty was paid or due a soldier as well as remarks outlining the soldier's status (wounds, sickness, desertion, POW). Includes similar, but separate muster rolls for United States Colored Troops (USCT) units. Unique to USCT records was the mustering-in of slaves beginning in fall of 1863. These rolls list the name of the slave, organization assigned, when and where mustered-in, mustering officer, county accredited (for purpose of quota), and the slave owner's name. Naval muster rolls are included as well. These rolls indicate ship assignment in addition to the standard muster roll information. Also included are records pertaining to men from other states credited to Maryland's quota as well as listings for Marylanders serving in units from other Union states. Militia and USCT muster rolls arranged by unit. Naval rolls and related correspondence arranged alphabetically by individual.
