106 / THE ALGER HISS TRIAL Witness: Joseph R. Boucot Boucot owned the cottage in Smithtown that Chambers and his wife rented in July and August 1935 when they were using the alias Breen. Boucot's cottage was a hundred feet away from their cottage. Boucot testified that he saw "Mrs. Breen" quite a few times and was in their cottage several times for coffee. He said he never saw Mrs. Hiss there. Witness: Norma Brown Boucot's sister had spent two weeks in August 1935 with her brother. She testified that she had met the "Breens" but had never seen or met anyone else staying with them. The defense believed Boucot's and Brown's testimony demolished Mrs. Chambers's story that Mrs. Hiss visited her that summer. Be the Jury Did Mrs. Hiss visit Smithtown?
