Prosecution itnesses / 79 Witness: Meyer Schapiro Schapiro, a professor of art at Columbia University, knew Chambers from college. He testified that in December 1936 Chambers had asked him to get four Oriental rugs. A receipt for the four rugs was submitted as evidence. The rugs were shipped to Washington, D.C., to a man named Silverman. The defense declined to cross-examine Schapiro.
