70 / THE ALGER HISS TRIAL Tuesday, December 6, 1949 Witness: Esther Chambers Direct Examination by the Prosecution Esther Chambers was short and slim with a pleasant face framed by dark hair and glasses that seemed oversized for her thin face. She answered all questions cautiously in a soft voice. She explained that she had been sympathetic toward the Communist party but had never joined. She had willingly assumed the many aliases required by her husband's underground work. She had once even changed her first name and the name of her daughter.
