567 THE ALGER HISS TRIAL that time. The evidence did not change Chambers s story. He admitted that he had lied before but insisted that he was not lying now: He had left the party in mid-1938. The defense showed Chambers Exhibit 10, a report on the military situation between China and Japan. This report had not been typed on the Woodstock typewriter. Japanese are reported to be moving 80,000 fresh troopa from Japan via Mukden. First of these troops arrived at liukden on December i'/th. Believes they are destined for the northern frontier Barracks with a capacity of 50,000 troops are reported to have been erected at Chaimuasu and Poll in northeast Manchuria. Other barracks with capacities for 100,000 troops are reported to be located between railroads which are rapidly being pushed to the Mongolian and northeast'frontiers. Japanese agents are (^ported to be fomenting action by Mohammedans in Ninghsla and Chenghl to harrass the Urunchi-Lanchow Road. Chambers admitted that he might not have gotten it from Hiss. The defense was surprised. Every other time he had testified, Chambers had sworn all the documents came from Hiss. Q« But every time before this, you said all the documents came from Hiss?
