Choosing the Jury / 29 defense lawyer represents the defendant. The contest begins with jury selection. Both sides want jurors who are impartial (unprejudiced). Among the questions the judge asked to eliminate biased jurors was, "Do you consider yourself prejudiced against testimony by Communists, ex-Communists, or those accused of Communist ties?" Twenty-five people were excused because they had read a lot about the case. Three people were excused because they were friends of the lawyers. One man was excused because he said he couldn't possibly believe the testimony of an ex-Communist. Within two hours, eight women and four men were chosen.
