William H. Lemmel (1896-1953)

Biography:

Born William Hugo Lemmel, November 15, 1896, in Hope, Missouri.  Son of John and Emma (Ulrich) Lemmel.  Attended Missouri State Teachers College at Cape Girardeau; University of Iowa; Teachers College at Columbia University.  Married Pansy King in 1917; one son: Charles R. Lemmel.  Died January 29, 2009, in Annapolis, Maryland.  Buried at Lakeside Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Dover, Delaware.

William Hugo Lemmel, son of John and Emma (Ulrich) Lemmel, was born in Hope, Missouri, on November 15, 1896. He received degrees from the Univesrity of Iowa and the Teacher's College University. Dr. Lemmel became the superintendent of Baltimore City public schools in July 1946, following the retirement of Dr. David E. Weglein. Previously he served as the superintendent of schools in Wilmington, Delaware.

Dr. Lemmel died in Annapolis on Thursday, January 29, 1953, after falling ill while addressing a joint legislative committee in the Senate chamber. (The hearing concerned  proposed legislation to increase minimum teachers' salaries.) According to the Sun's report, he "collapsed within two minutes after he began his remarks at the lectern of the reading clerk's desk in the Senate chamber." Prior to his collapse, he "gripped the sides of the lectern and said: 'I do not think I can go on.'" He was taken into the Senate lounge and then to Anne Arundel General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Following a funeral in Baltimore at Brown Memorial Church, he was buried at Lakeside Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Dover, Delaware.
