Daniel Giruad Wright (1840-1922)
MSA SC 3520-14407
Judge, Baltimore City Supreme Bench, 1888-1910

Biography:

Daniel Giraud Wright was born in Rio de Janeiro on June 1, 1840. His father, Robert Clinton Wright, was a coffee trader with Maxwell, Wright & Co, living in Brazil at the time. Wright returned to the United States for his education, and enrolled at the University of Virginia. However, at age 21 Wright left school to enlist in the Confederate army, where he served with several commanders, including Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. He also served under John Singleton Mosby as one of the notorious “Mosby’s Raiders.” At the time of Lee’s surrender in 1865, Wright was in a Union prison after being captured. Wright was admitted to the Bar in 1867, and became the examiner of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore City. He was elected to the position of Associate Justice of that same court in 1888, and served in that role until 1910, when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. In 1896, Wright was one of the charter members of the Maryland State Bar Association. Wright died in 1922.
