Biography:

Born 1831. Studied law with James Mason Campbell. Admitted to the bar 1851. Father of Edward Duffy, Jr. (1867-1956), charter member of Maryland State Bar Association, and Henry Duffy (1862-1948). Died, Baltimore, Maryland, July 1, 1892.

Gained fame as a special prosecutor to the State Attorney in the murder trial of Henry Gambrill, 1858, one of the most prominent cases of the day. Founding member, Bar Association of Baltimore City, 1880; member of Executive Committee. Elected to Supreme Bench, November 7, 1882, as part of the "New Judge" movement, spurred by public backlash against allegations of political corruption within Baltimore City government. Served on the bench until his death. Member, founding board of trustees, Enoch Pratt Free Library.
