Biography:

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, January 15, 1887.  Son of Dr. B. Holly Smith (d. 1918) and Frances Gist Hopkins Smith.  Attended the Tome School.  Received B.A., Johns Hopkins University, 1906; LL.B., University of Maryland Law School, 1908.  Admitted to the bar, December 24, 1908.  Married, Spalding Donovan Smith; three children, W. Conwell Smith, Jr., Mrs. Van Fossen Schwab, and Mrs. Innis C. Haines.  Died in Baltimore, Maryland, June 3, 1954.

Private practice with Mengel, Barton & Smith, 1908-1913.  First Lieutenant, Air Service, 1918-1919.  Associate Judge, Supreme Bench of Baltimore City, 1938-1944. Chief Judge of the Supreme Bench, 1946-1954.  Member, House of Delegates of the American Bar Association, 1930-1938. State Delegate, American Bar Association, 1943-1946. Member, Board of the Mental Hygiene Society 1944-1954. Member, Board of Trustees of the Endowment Fund of the University of Maryland, 1945-1954. Member, Standing Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure of the Court of Appeals of Maryland 1946-1954.
